Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Translational Medicine and Chemical Biology

The candidate is expected to establish a new competitive research program at the Department employing methods from chemical, synthetic and systems biology to study protein function in the complexity of the living cell. The successful candidate is expected to lead an independent research group that integrates into the existing research landscape of the Department, to contribute to the Department’s scientific and teaching activities, and to have secured substantial funding for his/her research group for at least four years from the date of obtaining the position.
The successful candidate is expected to develop cutting edge technology in the area of synthetic and systems biology, such as proteomics, transcriptomics, (epi)genomics, protein engineering. The research should complement top-down systems biology with bottom-up engineering approaches, for example CRISPR/Cas (epi)genome engineering, protein engineering using genetic code expansion and non-canonical amino acid mutagenesis. With the senior researcher position, the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics is particularlt seeking to strengthen its research profile in the field of stem cell biology, epigenetics, genome function and gene expression regulation.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he/she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor (M.D. and/or Ph.D. title) or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his/her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant Professor.

In addition, the successful candidate shall have at least four years of experience in leading an independent research group, training MSc and PhD-level students and teaching. He/she shall have demonstrated scientific leadership through publications in leading journals as first or senior/corresponding author, international visibility as evident from research collaborations, invited presentations and commissions of trust. He/she shall have a track record of financial independence as evident from highest-level fellowships and awards, prior and current national and European grants. The successful candidate must show potential for long-term research funding. A track record in commercialization of research results or collaboration with industrial partners is beneficial.

Expected skills and qualifications

  • Expertise in ‘omics’ techniques (proteomics, transcriptomics, genomics) and respective multi-omics data analysis techniques
  • Expertise in synthetic biology methodologies
  • Experience in stem cell research
  • Track record in international and interdisciplinary collaborative research
  • Experience in supervision of students and postdocs
  • Experience in managing personnel and research
  • Experience in teaching at BSc, MSc and PhD level

Bases of assessment
