Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
The Division of Neurogeriatrics comprises around 70 people, mainly located in the new Bioclinicum building, Campus Solna, but also in the Neo building, Campus Flemingsberg.
The research focus of the Division is neurodegenerative diseases and disorders. Many of our researchers focus on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, but other conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke and CNS trauma is also addressed by research groups.
The main interest of our research group is spinal cord injuries and possible treatments through human cell therapy. Cell therapy can improve the outcome of spinal cord injury through numerous mechanisms. One of the possible mechanisms is that the graft replaces lost cells, provided that the grafted cells differentiate to the neural cell types present in the spinal cord. Consequently we also study mechanisms of differentiation of cells in the spinal cord.
For the present post-doc position we need a person that will work on the development of the human spinal cord, identifying subpopulations of neural progenitor cells and their differentiated progeny, and applying this knowledge on the analysis of grafted human cells in animal models of spinal cord injury. The project is a part of the Human Developmental Cell Atlas, a Swedish branch of the Human Cell Atlas (humancellatlas.org).
We now want to expand the group with a 1 year postdoc position with possibility of extension. The applicant is expected to work at both KI campuses.

Duties
As a member of the team, you will apply a variety of methods such as single-cell RNA-seq, in situ-sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, multiplex immunofluorescence, and other relevant methods to define the cell populations in the human central nervous system, with a particular focus on the spinal cord. You will use these and other techniques to analyze the differentiation and maturation of transplanted human stem and progenitor cells in rodent models of spinal cord injury. You will also identify other techniques that may be relevant to achieve our research goals. Since the aim of the project also is to define the differentiation process and phenotypes of transplanted human progenitor cells, you may be engaged in work with research animals (rodents).
Besides the general duties of all members of the research group, of maintaining a work environment that complies with the rules and regulations of Karolinska Institutet, you are also expected to share the responsibility of our core facility for collection of human tissue.

Entry requirements
We want to employ a person with a PhD in research in developmental biology of the CNS, regenerative medicine and/or neural stem cell biology. You should have social skills to interact with colleagues in other research groups, since much of the work is performed in collaboration with others. You should be able to communicate fluently in spoken and written English. Experience from spinal cord injury research, experience from using bioinformatics in the analysis of single cell RNA-sequencing, and certificate of approved FELASA education are all considered as significant merits.

A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
