Karolinska Institutet,

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. The Division and project
The work on this project will be performed at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology located in the new research center Biomedicum in Stockholm/Solna, which is a home of a number of high quality research groups and well-equipped facilities. The areas of research in this division have a strong focus on molecular mechanisms on cell and muscle physiology in extreme conditions, exercise and metabolic diseases.
This postdoc position is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 project GOLIATH: “Beating Goliath: Generation of novel, integrated and internationally harmonized approaches for testing metabolism disrupting compounds”, which is aiming to develop and evaluate in vitro and in silico methods for identification of endocrine disrupting chemicals contributing to metabolic disorders. The project consortium includes world-leading experts in endocrinology, molecular biology, endocrine disruption, toxicology, epidemiology, test method development, validation and chemical regulation, with the total project budget of 6.7 million EUR. Karolinska Institutet is one of 14 participant institutions from all over Europe and one from the USA.

Duties
The candidate will be working within the EU Horizon 2020 funded project GOLIATH on the development and evaluation of in vitro methods for identification of metabolism disrupting chemicals affecting adipogenesis and the development of insulin resistance in adipocytes. The candidate will be studying the impact of selected chemicals on the differentiation of adipocytes from human mesenchymal stem cells and adipocyte function using automated high content cell imaging, quantitative RT-PCR, Western blot, confocal microscopy, and ELISA techniques. At the start of the project the candidate will spend 2-3 months visiting a collaborator’s laboratory in the USA, working on the harmonization of protocols. The candidate is expected to write protocols, keep a good track of data, and contribute to writing reports and scientific articles.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. The candidate should have a PhD in biology, toxicology, biomedicine, life science, pharmacology or similar area and has demonstrated skills in in vitro laboratory work.
Other requirements:

  • Extensive experience in cell culture and the development of cell based assays
  • Experience with confocal microscopy and Western blot
  • Extensive experience in scientific writing (scientific articles, reports, protocols, lab notebook)
  • Experience in any of the following fields: insulin signaling and/or metabolic diseases, endocrine disrupting chemicals and adipocyte

Advantages:

  • Experience in experimental work with: quantitative RT-PC, compound screening and cell imaging

Personal skills
We are looking for a flexible and independent postdoctoral researcher with an interest in endocrine disrupting chemicals and toxicology. The ideal candidate should be organized, responsible, practical and pay attention to detail. Furthermore, the candidate should have excellent critical thinking and team work skills, should perform precise in experimental work, and have good communication skills in written and spoken English.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
