Postdoctoral studies in Immunology/Hematology (scholarship)

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

The laboratory of Itziar Martinez Gonzalez is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our collaborative team investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms that govern immune regulation in the context of blood development, function, and disease. We offer access to advanced technologies, interdisciplinary expertise, mentorship from internationally recognized investigators and a vibrant scientific community. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful discoveries at the intersection of immunology and hematology, with direct relevance to inflammation and hematologic malignancies.

Division

The laboratory of Itziar Martinez Gonzalez is located at the Division of Virology and Immunology.  The division consists of a multi-disciplinary group of experimentalists, computational biologists, PhD students and researchers with different backgrounds. We always aim for an open and creative environment. This division comprises ten research groups working on different aspects of molecular virology, viral immunity, T- and B-cell biology, innate immunity, vaccine responses to complex antigens and tumor immunology. Our vision is to drive innovative studies that advance our understanding of viral diseases and cancers, and to develop treatments that will make significant contributions to global health. As part of the MTC Department, located at the Biomedicum building, we have access to state-of-the art cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry, microscopy and animal facilities. Advanced omics technologies are accessible through SciLifeLab across the street.

To build a strong and creative research team, we are looking for high achievers from universities around the world. We will offer an intellectually stimulating environment and we look for talented people who will play a part in developing our next breakthrough ideas. Our aim is to promote independent researchers that will build their careers in science.

Duties

The incidence of allergic diseases is increasing, especially in developed countries. Chronic type 2 inflammation characterize these diseases, leading to the release of cytokines and mediators into circulation, potentially having effects in other tissues such as the bone marrow. We will study how the dynamic process of normal and malignant hematopoiesis is shaped in the context of type 2 inflammation. This will involve using state of the art mouse models, including bone marrow transplantation approaches, advanced flow cytometry and high throughput sequencing data analysis.

The successful candidate will lead the development of the project, under the supervision of Sergio Martinez Høyer. The candidate is expected to be well organized and be able to carry out the work independently. As a member of the research team, engagement in common laboratory tasks and duties is expected. Teaching opportunities may be available.

Entry requirements

A strong background in immunology and/or hematology and experience with mouse model work and flow cytometry is required. Experience in performing procedures in mice (such as tail vein injection, intranasal administration, blood sampling) is preferred. Prior experience in bioinformatic data analysis will be prioritized. Good scientific writing, personal and communicating skills will be an asset.

Specific requirements for the position in addition to those above:

  • Documented history of having completed and published one’s research
  • Experience with mouse handling procedures
  • Experience with flow cytometry
  • Excellent communication skills and motivation to work collaboratively
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in parallel
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

Meritorious for the position:

  • Good knowledge of genetics and epigenetics
  • Good understanding of immunology and/or hematopoiesis
  • Experience with genome editing or cell transduction
  • Hands-on experience with cell sorting
  • Familiarity with tools for workflows and software development such as GitHub
  • Expertise in R and foundations of statistics
  • Experience in analysis of high throughput data analysis

Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their postdoctoral research in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

What do we offer?
