Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Division of Neurogeriatrics

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

Division

A postdoctoral scholarship is available in the electrophysiology laboratory run by Associate Professor Luis Enrique Arroyo Garcia under the research group of Helena Karlström at the Division of Neurogeriatrics, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet. The laboratory is located in BioClinicum, Solna campus, where all the experiments will be conducted.

The electrophysiology laboratory is focused on unraveling the mechanisms affecting synaptic networks that condition cognitive decline in the early progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Our goal is to evaluate basic pathogenesis and pharmacological interventions in psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases using ex vivo electrophysiological approaches in combination with transcriptomic, morphological, and behavioral techniques in animal models and human samples.

Duties

The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in the different experimental approaches in the lab, from brain ex vivo electrophysiological recordings (whole-cell patch clamp and local field recordings) in animal models of AD and human biopsies, animal behavior experiments, confocal microscopy for immunostaining, RNA sequencing, and proteomics data processing, ELISA, qPCR, and Mesoscale discovery.

Entry requirements

We are seeking an ambitious postdoctoral fellow with great teamwork and communication skills, who has a strong background in neurodegenerative diseases. The successful applicant should have extensive experience and practical skills from research animal work, ex vivo electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, and regular protein and RNA analysis methods such as western blot, qPCR, ELISA, MSD and cell-and molecular biology techniques. It is meritorious to demonstrate knowledge in proteomics analysis using R coding language, and data processing using different packages such as edgeR, DEP, and MSstats. Furthermore, good ability to speak and write English is a requirement. A strong scientific drive is expected, documented with a publication record.

Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: BioClinicum, Karolinska Institutet, Solna campus, Sweden

Type of scholarship

This is a postdoctoral scholarship for one year, with the possibility of a second year. The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
