Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for a motivated and engaged postdoctoral researcher to the research group Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. The position is for 2 years (but may be possible to extend for another 2 years).

The research group and the project

Our research group ‘Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery’ is located in the heart of KI’s main campus area in Solna (close to the city centre). The group includes graduated researchers, biostatisticians, PhD candidates, students and an administrator. We conduct internationally leading research examining diseases and surgery of the oesophagus and stomach with a focus on cancer. You can read more about our group here: http://ki.se/en/mmk/upper-gi-surgery

The postdoctoral researcher will study the aetiology and survival of oesophageal and gastric cancer, i.e., upper gastrointestinal cancer. The research project will be based on data from one or more of our four Nordic databases with data from national registries in all the five Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland). These four databases are 1) a case-control study of 0.11 million cases of oesophageal or gastric cancer and over 1.1 million population controls, which is ideal for pharmacoepidemiological studies; 2) a cohort of 1 million patients with obesity, including those who have undergone obesity surgery; 3) a cohort of 1.7 million patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, including those who have undergone antireflux surgery; and 4) a cohort of 0.7 million patients who have received eradication treatment of Helicobacter pylori. The main registries are those for patients (for diagnoses and procedures), medication (for prescribed and dispensed drugs), cancer (for malignant tumours), death (for date and causes of deaths) and total population (for migration, education and selection of control participants).

Supervisor

The supervisor is Jesper Lagergren, who is professor and consultant surgeon, research group leader, and member of the Nobel Assembly at KI. He also holds a part-time position as professor and surgeon at King’s College London. You can read more about him here: https://ki.se/en/people/jesper-lagergren#about-me

The postdoctoral researcher will be guided in data management and analysis by Dr Giola Santoni, who is an experienced biostatistician with specific knowledge in Nordic register-based studies. You can read more about her here: https://ki.se/en/people/giola-santoni
