The Department of Oncology-Pathology is searching for a post-doctoral fellow to work with Dr Ola Larsson and co-workers to study the role of mRNA translation in cancer. Dysregulated mRNA translation is emerging as a central facet in cancer progression that is incompletely understood. The Larsson group is seeking the upstream signals as well as the downstream effectors underlying transcript-selective alterations of translation in cancer. The overall goal is to understand how mRNA translation can be targeted in future anti-cancer therapy.
The Larsson lab focuses on understanding the role of mRNA translation in several cancer types and in both cancer and stromal cells. The focus is on achieving transcriptome-wide and detailed molecular understanding of how mRNA translation is dysregulated in cancer. The lab has expertise in development of state-of-the-art methods for wet-lab based studies of mRNA translation as well as development of computational tools to analyse the generated data. The focus for the project will be to use biostatistics and bioinformatics to understand how mRNA translation is organized and orchestrated in health and disease.
This project is focused on understanding how mRNA translation is altered in cancer. Initially, multimodal data sets from large-scale studies will be used to delineate how mRNA translation is organized and how it interacts with other steps in the gene-expression pathway to control proteome composition. In the second step, the focus will be to identify mechanisms underlying this organization of mRNA translation and how these are altered in cancer. To this end, data sets from both in-vitro models and patient samples will be used.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Other requirements
The ideal candidate is highly motivated, with an outstanding completed PhD thesis (or equivalent) and a strong drive for a future career in research. The candidate should be capable of generating novel ideas, acquire knowledge independently and possess sufficient computational skills to evaluate and develop new methods for analysis of large scale data sets acquired using next-generation sequencing approaches.
Fluency in spoken and written English is required. At least one paper in a high quality international peer-reviewed journal is necessary to be considered and additional academic merits are also considered. Because of the scope of the project, knowledge and experience in bioinformatics and biostatistics including programming in languages such as R is required. Previous experience with analysis of data from next-generation sequencing at a nucleotide level is strongly preferred. Experience in analysis of large scale gene expression data sets is an advantage and knowledge in post-transcriptional mechanisms for regulation of gene expression is also a strong merit. In addition, personal suitability will be a factor in the selection process.
Location: Department of oncology-pathology, Karolinska Institutet.
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:
