Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct innovative medical research and provide the largest range of biomedical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is a state university, which entitles employees to several benefits such as extended holiday and a generous occupational pension. Employees also have free access to our modern gym and receive reimbursements for medical care.

Division

A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Carl M. Sellgren at the department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet. Sellgren lab is located in Biomedicum, a new interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate much of the experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna. Our research focuses on developing induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cellular 3D models to study neurodevelopmental disorders and with a focus on the interplay between glial cells and synapses. For this purpose we have a large collection of patient-derived cells collected at clinics in Stockholm and Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). The research is well funded from e.g. Marianne and Markus Wallenbergs Stiftelse, One Mind Foundation, the Swedish Research Council, Stockholm County, and Erling Perssons Stiftelse. The research environment is international and we have close collaborations with laboratories world-wide.

Duties

The postdoctoral fellow will together with other postdoctoral fellows and PhD students in the laboratory work with method development as well as disease modelling using different types of directed and undirected protocols.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent. We are seeking a highly motivated and independent postdoctoral researcher that has extensive previous experience from deriving cerebral organoids. In the laboratory we are also using a wide selection of techniques for quantifying cellular phenotypes such as super-resolution imaging, electrophysiology, 2D phagocytosis assays, and scRNA sequencing. Disease modelling includes patient vs. control modelling as well as using isogenic lines and previous experience with genetic engineering in iPSC lines is meriting.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
