Postdoctoral studies in Immunology to HERM / NEO

Unit
The Center for Hematology and Regenerative medicine, HERM, is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on translational hematology and immunology. HERM is located in the NEO building and consists of a mix of clinical and preclinical research groups, each with a focus on clinically relevant questions in hematology, stem cell biology and immunology, including basic immunology, immunodeficiency and transfusion immunology.

Recruiting research group
Professor Petter Höglund leads a translational immunology group with a focus on natural killer (NK) cells, platelets and neutrophils. See https://ki.se/en/medh/petter-hoglund-group for more information. The group is now looking for a motivated, well-organized postdoctoral scientist to study the function of blood cells across various medical conditions. There will be an initial focus on developing novel platforms for functional characterization of platelets and neutrophils using flow cytometry and characterization these cells in various disease conditions and in healthy donors.

Responsibilities
The main responsibility will be to develop and conduct independent research projects at the postdoctoral level within the line of ongoing research in the group. The candidate is expected to provide expertise and constructive collaborative efforts into ongoing projects, including providing supervision of project students. Laboratory work in the group includes all aspects of an immunology lab, such as molecular biology, cell culture and flow cytometry.

Qualifications and entry requirements
Applicants must have adequate university education in biomedicine or cell biology. The candidate must have a PhD or corresponding training such as an MD with research experience. The successful candidate is very well-organized, responsible, collaborative and likes to work in a dynamic environment with diverse tasks. The applicant should demonstrate practical experience in molecular biology, cell biology and flow cytometry techniques. For the latter, advanced knowledge regarding FACS analysis of platelets is a requirement. Good collaborate skills, independence, communication skills and computer skills are required. Previous experience in imaging are considered advantageous. Good knowledge in written and spoken English is required.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Flemingsberg

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis with the possibility of extension for another 12 months.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of previous work experience (no more than one page)
  • Personal letter
  • A summary of qualifications in terms of methods with detailed description of the level of knowledge with examples. This is particularly important when it comes to work with flow cytometry and experimental animals but will also facilitate evaluation at large.

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
