Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are a research group studying non-coding RNAs in skin inflammation, using a combination of patient material, using state-of the-art in vitro and in vivo disease models. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be part of a team with an enthusiasm for science and a longstanding interest in non-coding RNA biology and inflammation in the skin.

Division

The Dermatology and Venereology Division is part of the Department of Medicine Solna at KI. Within the division, there are several research groups investigating different aspects of skin diseases, including skin inflammation and skin cancer. The research is performed in an interdisciplinary setting with strong collaboration with clinical departments and other national and international research groups. The principal investigator Enikö Sonkoly MD PhD, works in close collaboration with other dermatology research groups at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM).

Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible to design and perform in vitro and in vivo mechanistic experiments to dissect the role of non-coding RNAs in inflammatory skin diseases.

The project includes studies on primary cell cultures, patient samples and mouse models of inflammation. We have more than a decade of experience with skin biology and non-coding RNA research which creates a unique combination. The methods we use are molecular biology techniques with a special emphasis on non-coding RNA biology using antisense and CRISPR-based systems to study non-coding RNA-function, in cell culture and 3D skin models, and to an increasing extent, data analysis with bioinformatics methods.

The main duties of the successful candidate will be:

  • Designing, performing and establishing state-of-the-art in vitro and in vivo assays
  • Overall responsibility for the research project, including following relevant literature identifying and communicating need for further developments
  • Writing scientific articles
  • Supervision of junior researchers/students
  • Presenting results on scientific congresses

Entry requirements

We are looking for a researcher with a genuine interest in medical research, molecular biology and problem solving who would join our team in exploring the molecular background of skin inflammation.

The candidate should possess a PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. biomedicine, molecular biology, pharmacy, medicine). Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The successful candidate has a genuine interest in research and an inner drive to understand biological problems. The candidate is expected to use a wide range of molecular biology methods for the characterization of relevant pathways in primary cells, patient samples and animal models. Experience with, and a deep understanding of, molecular biology techniques and cell culture is a requirement. Experience in non-coding RNA research is meritorious. Experience with animal models is not a requirement but meritorious. Experience with bioinformatics analysis (e.g. analysis of RNAseq data, knowledge of R), is meritorious.

The work requires a good collaboration ability, the ability to solve problems and openness to learn new methods as well as ability to supervise students/colleagues. An excellent knowledge of English language, both oral and written, is required.

Key criteria:

  • Relevant scientific competence and skills
  • Relevant work experience
  • Personal suitability
  • Language skills and communication skills

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group Sonkoly (https://www.cmm.ki.se/eniko-sonkoly-group1, located at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM, cmm.ki.se). The Sonkoly group has a close collaboration with other dermatology research groups that are located in CMM.  CMM offers also core facilities and opportunities to collaborate with other translational research groups. The proximity of CMM to the New Karolinska Hospital allows for collaboration with clinicians at the dermatology clinic which is a prerequisite for translational projects.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
