The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students. Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.
The areas of research in the research group of Associate Professor Andrea Carmine Belin are neurological disorders with a focus on neurovascular disorders such as cluster headache. The team wants to increase the understanding of the pathophysiology of neurovascular disorders by identifying, characterizing and modelling genetic markers within the human genome. We suggest that there are multiple genetic factors that combine in different ways to increase or decrease risk for these disorders. They need to be identified in order to begin unwinding the causative pathways leading to the different forms of the disorders. The identification of new genetic risk and protective markers for these disorders should allow insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms, and thereby lead to improved diagnosis and aid in the development of novel classes of drugs able to prevent and/or counteract disease.
The project will be focused on identification of genetic factors involved in cluster headache by an integrative and interdisciplinary approach with focus on circadian rhythm and treatment. The candidate will be responsible for collecting and managing biological samples and clinical data from patients and controls. The candidate will use molecular biology tools such as qPCR to elucidate biological pathways which are believed to be involved in cluster headache pathophysiology. One duty will be to further develop and use a real-time reporter construct of circadian dynamics to transfect primary fibroblast cell lines from patients and controls.
The candidate needs knowledge concerning the use of molecular biology tools to elucidate biological pathways which are believed to be involved in cluster headache pathophysiology. Experience in handling biobanks is an appreciated property of the applicant. Clinical data is collected in Swedish, therefore a good level of Swedish is a merit. Previous experience of working with large data sets and analysis using the statistical program GraphPad is a requirement. The candidate should have experience from cell culture work and be capable of working independently in a cell lab. It is important that the candidate fits in the team and emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. A person is eligible for this position if he or she has achieved a Master Degree competence or equivalent.
