Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Huddinge
We are seeking a highly motivated and driven postdoctoral candidate to join the laboratory of Vanessa Lundin, who was recently recruited from Harvard Medical School and is currently expanding her research group at the Karolinska Institute. The group is part of the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM) located at Department of Medicine, Huddinge. HERM consists of 15 research groups and is a nationally leading and internationally competitive research environment for studies of hematopoiesis, blood disorders and the human immune system, with the vision to become one of the leading translational research centers in Europe within this field. The environment offers state-of-the art cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry, sequencing and microscopy facilities. In our group, you will be working in a highly interdisciplinary and international setting, where collaborative efforts are encouraged.

Project description
The main research focus of the Lundin lab is to use pluripotent stem cells to model and understand hematopoiesis. By integrating concepts and tools from polymer science, microfluidics and 3D cell culture, we are establishing novel cell culture systems that emulate in vivo hematopoietic niches and promote definitive blood formation. Specifically, we are interested in learning how cells communicate and interact with cells and matrix in their microenvironment, and how we can exploit the same mechanisms to control cell fate and steer lineage formation in a culture dish. The goal is to identify molecular mediators of mechanical forces and extrinsic cues in hematopoietic niches and understand how they direct blood formation in health and disease. The position provides an exciting opportunity to apply cutting-edge technology and work at the interface of stem cell biology and biomaterial sciences.

Entry requirements
We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic researcher with a Ph.D. degree from an institution outside of Sweden and a background in cell and molecular biology and/or bioengineering. Extensive experience in cell culture and stem cell biology is required: in vitro work relies both on the culture and differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells as well as sample preparation and culture of human primary tissues. Knowledge in in vitro functional assays, advanced multicolor flow cytometry, cell sorting and next generation sequencing is preferable. Previoius work or a strong interest in biomaterials and bioengineering approaches is considered as an additional qualification.

The successful candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to work productively and dynamically in a team. Self-motivation and the ability to stay on top of the relevant research field is an absolute requirement. Applicants must be able to integrate well into the international and interdisciplinary research environment. Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English is a requirement.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months with the possibility to extend for another 12 months.

Application process

The application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A maximum one page cover letter summarizing motivation for the position, previous experience and research interest
