AIMES - Center for the Advancement of Integrated Medical and Engineering Sciences is a newly established interdisciplinary research center co-affiliated between Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). Research at AIMES is characterized by intimate interactions between pre-clinical and clinical scientists and researchers with natural sciences and engineering backgrounds. Biomedical research in infection and neuroscience is addressed by the development of cutting-edge approaches based on Organic Bioelectronics, Organ-on-Chip technology, and Tissue Microbiology, which combines expertise in electroactive polymers, chemistry, microfluidics, neurobiology, microbiology, physiology, pathology and intravital imaging. Other areas of research include renewable biomaterials, sensor technologies and anti-fouling surfaces. AIMES has an explicit aim to translate scientific findings to societal use via strong interactions with external stakeholders.
AIMES is located in Biomedicum, KI Campus Solna. AIMES is hosted at KI by the Department of Neuroscience, world-leaders in research on the function of the nervous system in health and disease. AIMES host at KTH is the Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology, the largest academic institution on native and synthetic polymers in Sweden.
AIMES seeks an Assistant Professor in Microbiology and Glycobiology with a focus on Bacterial Biofilms, Biopolymers and Optical Sensors.
The employment includes both research, education and outreach in Microbiology and Glycobiology. This position is multidisciplinary, aiming to span across research fields. The candidate will be expected to conduct research at the interface of Microbiology and Glycobiology, to initiate new lines of research, pursue application-driven research and establishing new collaborative research projects both within and beyond AIMES. Subject areas such as microbiology, infection biology, polymer technology, glycobiology, biopolymers, spectroscopy, live microscopy, optical sensor development.
The candidate will be engaged in teaching activities at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level, including the supervision of students. The duties also include course responsibility and the development of new curriculum of courses at the interface between fundamental and application-driven research.
The candidate will be involved in developing and conducting use-driven basic research, as well as sourcing and conducting academy-industry collaborations in basic research projects.
The position is a fixed time position for a minimum of four years and a maximum of six.
Following application, the Assistant Professor can apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Eligibility
An individual who has obtained a PhD not more than five years before application deadline or equivalent research expertise is qualified for appointment as Assistant Professor (Biträdande Lektor). Candidates who met those qualifications within five years prior to expiration of the application period should be prioritized. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
