Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Pan-Hammarström (PHA)

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Research group
The research group of Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström works on the molecular mechanism of immunoglobulin gene diversification, genetics of primary immunodeficiency and B-cell lymphomagenesis. The research laboratory is located at campus Flemingsberg. For more information about the group, please see https://ki.se/en/bionut/research-group-qiang-pan-hammarstrom

Duties
The selected postdoctoral fellow candidate will work in our multidisciplinary team of researchers including clinicians, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians, and will be jointly supervised by Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström and Prof. Lennart Hammarström, two international leading experts in the primary immunodeficiency field.

The main tasks for the successful candidate are:
1) Identification of new forms of primary immunodeficiency through multi-omic analysis, with focus on late B cell deficiencies. This will involve analysis, interpretation, and integration of high throughput data derived from sequencing of the whole exome/genome, transcriptome, metagenome, epigenome, proteome and single cell transcriptome.
2) Functional characterization of patients with defects in late B cell development. This may involve standard B-, T- and NK- cell functional analysis, characterization of DNA damage and repair defects, gene editing by the CRISPR/Cas9 technology as well as using iPSC as models to study B cell development.
3) The postdoc fellow is expected to assume a major role in the writing of scientific publications and grant applications and contribute to supervise PhD and master students in the group.

Qualifications
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate for the immunogenetic team in our group. The applicant should have been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree in medicine, immunology, genetics, molecular biology or areas relevant to the announced position.
He/she should have achieved the corresponding scientific competence, with first-authored publications in internationally leading journals in the corresponding fields. Extensive research experience in next generation sequencing data analysis and state-of-art molecular and cellular biology techniques is required. The applicant must be able to work productively through collaborative interactions with team members. Furthermore, the candidate should possess excellent communicating and writing skills in English.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific excellence and potential when assessing applicants. The applicants’ track record based on curriculum vitae and bibliography will be assessed. Evidence for independence, innovation and the capacity to work and publish in a multidisciplinary environment is weighted in ranking the applicants. Reference letters will be requested from the PhD supervisor(s) and considered from selected candidates.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six- months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

The position is 2 years.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including education, date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • Two recommendation letters, including at least one from the PhD supervisor

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
