Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neuroscience, Richter Dahlfors

The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.

Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.

The Swedish Medical Nanoscience Center, located at the Department of Neuroscience, represents a dynamic interdisciplinary setting where important medical problems are addressed with the aid of
nanotechnological approaches. Research performed in the Center is characterized by intimate
interactions between biomedical scientists and researchers with engineering backgrounds. The
biomedical research problems in primarily infection and neuroscience are addressed by the development of cutting-edge approaches based on Organic Bioelectronics, Organ-Chip technology, and Tissue Microbiology, which combines expertise in electroactive polymers, microfluidics, neurobiology, microbiology, physiology, pathology and intravital imaging. The Center has an explicit aim to translate scientific findings to societal use via strong interactions with external stakeholders.

Duties

We hereby invite applications for a Senior Researcher position in the area of Tissue Microbiology. The candidate is expected to develop his or her own independent research projects, while contributing complimentary knowledge and experience to the groups work on host-pathogen interaction with a particular focus on Tissue Microbiology. The candidate will take responsibility for our diverse in vivo infectious disease models and therefore knowledge of ethical considerations and applications, intravital imaging and animal surgery are required.

The candidate is expected to take advantage of the groups existing collaboration infrastructure, while at the same time seeking out new research partners. The candidate must therefore be able to lead successful collaborations. The selected candidate should also be prepared to supervise undergraduate and graduate students as well as post-doctoral fellows. The applicant will be responsible for the writing of research and review articles, and to submit or coordinate research proposals, i.e., to national programs and EU Framework Programmes in order to develop national and international collaborations. Excellent written and presentation skills are expected.

Entry requirements

A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.

As this position requires the coordination of a number of in vivo models, the applicant should hold the appropriate qualifications required for coordinating animal work at Karolinska Institutet (FELASA B equivalent), as well as training in animal surgery and the development of in vivo infection models. Experience with a number of bacterial pathogens both gram positive and gram negative will be required. The candidate should have an international-level publication record and demonstrated ability to perform independent research, with senior author publication. International research experience, networks and a proven track record in obtaining independent financing are advantageous.

The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, independent and resourceful, have good communication written and presentation skills, show good working habits, and have the ability to integrate well in multi-disciplinary research teams. A good track record of oral presentations and chairing at international conferences is desirable, as well as organizational experience. As this position will have extensive teaching responsibilities, excellent pedagogical merits are required including documented pedagogy courses at higher education level (preferably 10 weeks) and experience in the design, execution and examination of graduate level courses.

In addition to this, displayed pedagogical proficiency or other related skills that are relevant to the appointment's duties may be required to be eligible.

Bases of assessment

Of those candidates that meet the requirements as above, priority will be given research expertise that fits the common goals of the Center.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
