Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Solna, Infectious Diseases division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The Division of Infectious Diseases performs research and education in close collaboration with the Karolinska University Hospital. The research teams address a wide range of infectious diseases using clinical, epidemiological and experimental approaches.
The Färnert research group focuses on understanding mechanisms of acquisition and maintenance of immunity to malaria with the overall aim to contribute to malaria vaccine development. The group is now seeking a postdoctoral researcher who will focus on the importance of antigen diversity and immune responses to potential malaria vaccine candidate antigens. This involves studies of blood stage antigens using a newly developed multiplex B cell FluoroSpot based assay, which enables studies of antigen specificity and cross-reactivity on cellular level. Studies are based on well characterized cohorts in malaria endemic areas as well as travellers diagnosed with malaria in Sweden.
The group is based at the new research laboratories at BioClinicum on the Karolinska University Hospital site in Solna. The experimental environment is located in close proximity to the clinic.

Duties
The postdoctoral researcher will investigate the genetic diversity within specific antigens in relation to antibody and memory B cell responses using a newly developed multiplex B cell FluoroSpot assay. The project will include genotyping of antigens by PCR, sequencing data analyses, antigen expression and serology and cellular immunology.  The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in all parts of the project, ranging from generating own research ideas and laboratory work, data analysis, supervision of students, statistical analysis, and writing scientific publications.

Entry requirements
The candidate must hold a PhD equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree in the field of molecular biology or immunology. The applicant should have knowledge and practical experience in different molecular and immunological techniques. It is advantageous if the candidate has expertise in protein expression and purification, cell-based immunoassays and previous experience with malaria.
The group is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious postdoctoral researcher. The candidate is expected to be organized and able to work independently. The project is pursued in an interdisciplinary environment and international collaborations with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are a requirement necessary. Fluency in English is mandatory.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
