Karolinska Institutet, The Department of Medicine, Huddinge

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join the research group of Eva Hellström Lindberg as a Postdoctoral Researcher to further elucidate stem and progenitor cell dysfunction, molecular pathways underlying pathogenesis and the molecular and cellular mechanisms of ineffective erythropoiesis in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Recent studies from our group on this subject encompass Rydén, et al., Leukemia 2018, Shiozawa, et al., Blood 2017, Mortera Blanco, et al., Blood 2017, Dimitriou, et al., Oncotarget 2016, Conte, et al., Br J Haematology 2015; Malcovati, et al, Blood 2015, Nikpour, et al. Leukemia 2013, Woll, et al., Cancer Cell 2014. We are exploring MDS erythropoiesis along two lines; to understand the competitive advantage of SF3B1 mutated stem cell in the human niche, and to outline the mechanisms behind terminal erythroid failure. The project will take place within the frame of a major collaborative research grant and a large personal grant from the Wallenberg Foundation.

Methods will involve advanced flow cytometry and sorting, DNA and RNA-sequencing, single-cell sequensing, advanced cell culture systems, imaging techniques, and functional analyses of stem and progenitor cells.

The Research group
The research group is based at the Center of Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM), Karolinska Institutet. HERM consists of 16 research groups and approximately 100 people and is a nationally leading and internationally competitive environment for studies of hematopoiesis, blood disorders and the human immune system in the context of malignancy and infectious diseases. The vision is to become one of the leading translational research centers in Europe within this field. The environment offers state-of-the art cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry and microscopy facilities. In the http://ki.se/en/medh/eva-hellstrom-lindberg-group, you will be working in an international and interdisciplinary research environment, where collaborative efforts are encouraged.

Duties
You are expected to be a talented and enthusiastic researcher with a strong drive to be a part of translational research, be instrumental in the elaboration of scientific hypothesis, experimental design, experimentation, data analysis and presentation/publication of results. You must be a good team player but still retain enough independence to explore your results from a conceptual standpoint. You will be responsible for your own academic, research and administrative activities, adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques, test hypotheses and analyze data from a variety of sources.

Besides working on existing lab projects, postdocs are encouraged to start their own new projects that can serve to launch their independent careers in science. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment for development of independent scientists.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. A PhD in Cell or Molecular Biology, Hematopoiesis or related sciences is required.

Excellent spoken and written English is a requirement. Applicants should have first author publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals.

The position requires experience with some of the above described methodologies but more important is a capacity for scientific thinking, high ambition, and collaborative and communicative skills.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
