Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM), Department of Medicine at South Campus of Karolinska Institute was created during 2011 with a mission to join research groups within hematology, hematopoietic cell therapy and tumor immunology in a new translational research environment. HERM has an excellent structure and capacity for advanced cell culture, molecular biology, biobanking, and a cutting-edge facility for flow cytometry.

Description of the project
The research focus of Hong Qian’s group (http://ki.se/en/medh/hong-qian-group) at HERM is prospective characterization of bone marrow mesenchymal niche in patients with myeloid leukemia using multi-color flow cytometry, advanced molecular tools including RNA sequencing, transgenic mouse models as well as human materials. We are currently investigating the role of bone marrow niche components including mesenchymal stem cells in acute and chronic myeloid leukemia. We are aiming to identify novel molecular pathways mediating the interactions between leukemic cells and their mesenchymal niche in bone marrow during myeloid malignancies. The potential findings from this research program may help to understand cellular mechanisms underlying regulation of leukemia and to develop better niche-based therapeutic strategies in myeloid leukemia.

Duties
We are looking for a highly self-motivated person with a strong background in cellular and molecular biology with a keen interest in bone marrow microenvironment. Experience in working with molecular and cellular biology techniques, multi-color flow cytometry, mice and bioinformatics is highly desired; and good ability to communicate in English (written and verbal) is required. The successful candidate will research under the supervision of the group leader (Dr. Hong Qian) with a special focus on deciphering molecular pathways mediating leukemic stem cell interaction with their niche.  

Entry requirements
This scholarship is paid by Radiumhemmets Research funds, their rules will apply and the scholarship decision will be written by them. The research will be performed at Karolinska Institutet.

The scholarship for postdoctoral qualification can be established for Swedish or foreign researchers. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a five year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The scientific secretary at Radiumhemmets Research funds determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
