Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

Research group
The position is placed in the laboratory of Marianne Farnebo, which currently includes 8 employees - 3 PhD students and 4 postdocs - and locates at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at Karolinska Institutet. The laboratory studies the function of non-coding RNA and RNA-binding proteins in DNA repair and chromatin remodeling, and how defects in these processes contribute to cancer. A number of cutting-edge techniques required to study RNA are already up and running in Farnebo laboratory, including single-molecule RNA FISH, RNA tethering, live-cell imaging and laser-micro irradiation.

Farnebo laboratory recently moved to Biomedicum, a new interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate much of the experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna under one roof to promote collaboration. Biomedicum will house approximately 1,600 researchers and other personnel and allow expensive equipment to be shared and utilised more effectively.

Description of the Project
Although accumulating evidence reveals that RNA plays a key role in the regulation of chromatin structure, the underlying mechanism(s) remains poorly understood. The postdoc project will focus on characterizing the involvement of RNA and associated proteins in opening and closure of chromatin and in signaling and repair of DNA damage. This project is conceptually novel and expected to have important consequences on our understanding of chromatin integrity control and whether these functions are altered in cancer, which could have implications for cancer therapy.

Qualifications
To build a strong and creative research team, we are looking for high achievers from universities around the world. We will offer an intellectually stimulating environment and we look for talented people who will play a part in developing our next breakthrough ideas. Are you ready to discover the unexplored?

More specifically,

·         Applicant will hold a PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry

·         Applicant should have previous experience various cell biology techniques, including cell                 culture, microscopy, western blot and cloning.

·         Applicant should have a high personal drive and motivation

·         Applicant should be efficient and contribute productively in a team

·         Applicant should be fluent in English (written and spoken)

·         Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

Applicants who have completed their PhD degree no more than three years before the last date for applications are given priority.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defense is scheduled to take place within three months after the application deadline.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

The scholarships may be paid by Radiumhemmets Forskningsfonder.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

1.       Curriculum vitae
2.       A complete list of publication
3.       A personal letter
4.       Copy of university and high school/gymnasium transcripts and final grade scores

Deadline for applications is 10 May 2018, but interesting candidates can be called for interviews before this deadline so applying before the deadline is encouraged.

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
