Karolinska Institutet,

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Division
The research at The Section of Pharmacogenetics https://ki.se/en/fyfa/section-of-pharmacogenetics at the Department aims to understand the basis for liver diseases and to identify the genetic origin for differences between individuals in drug metabolism, toxicity and drug response. We, in collaboration with others, strive to understand repair of liver injury and to develop novel in vitro systems for predicting drug response and adverse drug reactions as well as to develop In vitro systems for liver disease and their treatment. The research is financed from e.g. ERC, Vinnova, The Swedish Cancer Foundation, EU (H2020) and The Swedish Research Council.

Duties
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who will work with an in vitro model for liver function and disease. The project focuses on use of complex multicellular 3D spheroid systems for identification of interventions of liver diseases like NAFLD, NASH and liver fibrosis. Using the 3D liver spheroid system composed of hepatocytes and non-parenchymal cells we mimic the different liver diseases and examine the mechanism behind using transcriptomic, proteomic and metabonomic analyses. The work includes to produce the liver spheroids from cryopreserved cells, cultivation of these systems and evaluating the effects of different conditions and drugs on disease development and treatment.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Qualifications
The candidate should have a PhD degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, physiology or similar. The candidate is expected to have a good understanding of biochemical, molecular biology, cell biology and/or genetic techniques, good communication skills and good proficiency in spoken and written English.

For this position we require that the successful candidate has much experience of cell cultivation and cell biology work. The candidate in question must have at least two years of laboratory experience with focus on cell biology and molecular biology. We value a person who is able to work quite independently.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
