Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) carries out both preclinical and clinical research within numerous fields. Linked to the department are approximately 450 researchers, postgraduate students, teachers and technical & administrative staff and we currently have about 150 PhD students. The department is conducting undergraduate courses for medical students, physiotherapist students, biomedicine students and biomedical laboratory students.

Division
Signal Transduction
Description of Prof. Per-Olof Berggren’s group and its work.
Our goal at the Berggren laboratory is to better understand the biological signaling mechanisms that lead to pancreatic beta cell dysfunction and its associated diseases such as diabetes. The area that we are especially interested in for this position is the role of inositol pyrophosphates in the regulation of insulin secretion. This phosphoinositol work is headed up by Christopher Barker, Assoc. Prof. in Cell Biology.

We currently have labs at the Rolf Luft Research Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet, POSTECH,(Pohang University of Science and Technology), Korea and at the Diabetes Research Institute of the University of Miami, USA and NTU, Singapore, where we perform advanced in vivo imaging, microsurgery, electrophysiological measurements, Ca2+-imaging and other state-of-the.-art molecular and cell biology. We have an active collaboration with Prof. Joilson Martins, at the University of São Paulo, Brazil.

Duties
The main objective of the research project is to investigate the role of inositol polyphosphate kinases in the production of inositol pyrophosphates and the regulation of beta cell function. This postdoctoral position demands work with microscopy in an in vivo context, animal work and surgical dexterity combined with a knowledge of a broader repertoire of molecular, cellular and biochemical techniques.

Entry requirements
As the research field is highly competitive and the projects need to advance without delay it is an advantage if the successful applicant is already familiar with major aspects of the research area. To join our team, we are looking for a highly motivated, hard-working individual with the following qualifications:

  • University degree in Biology.
  • Somebody who has had several years of previous post-doctoral experience.
  • Experience with microscopy.
  • Experience with applying microscopic techniques in an in vivo context.
  • Experience of surgery on animals.
  • Experience immunohistochemistry and measurements of hormones using ELISA. Relevant publication record.
  • Evidence for communication skills i.e. teaching experience and/or participation in relevant scientific conferences.
  • Can work as an independent scientist, but has strong ability to work as part of a team. Can communicate in English but a knowledge of Portuguese would be helpful to maintain our link to Prof. Martins laboratory at the University of São Paulo.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
