Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

Division
The scholarship position is placed in the laboratory of Marianne Farnebo, which currently includes 8 employees - 3 PhD students, 4 postdocs and a lab manager - and locates at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at Karolinska Institutet. The laboratory studies the function of non-coding RNA and RNA-binding proteins in DNA repair and chromatin remodeling, and how defects in these processes contribute to cancer. A number of cutting edge techniques required to study RNA are already up and running in Farnebo laboratory, including single-molecule RNA FISH, RNA tethering, live-cell imaging and laser-micro irradiation.

Farnebo laboratory recently moved to Biomedicum, a new interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate much of the experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna under one roof to promote collaboration. Biomedicum will house approximately 1,600 researchers and other personnel and allow expensive equipment to be shared and utilised more effectively.

Duties/Description of the project
Although accumulating evidence reveals that RNA plays a key role in the regulation of chromatin structure, the underlying mechanism(s) remains poorly understood. The postdoc project will focus on characterizing the involvement of RNA in the assembly and disassembly of chromatin and whether these functions are altered in cancer cells, which could have implications for cancer therapy. This project is conceptually novel and expected to have important consequences on our understanding of chromatin structure control and on downstream cellular functions, like transcription and DNA repair.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry. He/she should also have previous experience in molecular mechanisms of noncoding RNAs and/or chromatin functions and relevant techniques. Experience in biochemical approaches such as assaying chromatin assembly and analyzing phase separation in vitro is a strong merit.

To build a strong and creative research team, we are looking for high achievers from universities around the world. We will offer an intellectually stimulating environment and we look for talented people who will play a part in developing our next breakthrough ideas. Are you ready to discover the unexplored?

More specifically,

  • Applicant should have a high personal drive and motivation
  • Applicant should have innovative thinking and be eager to solve problems
  • Applicant should be efficient and able to contribute productively in a team
  • Applicant should be fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
The scholarships may be paid by Radiumhemmets Forskningsfonder.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. Curriculum vitae and qualifications
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. A personal letter
  5. Copy of university and high school/gymnasium transcripts and final grade scores

Deadline for applications is November 30, 2018, but interesting candidates can be called for interviews before this deadline so applying before the deadline is encouraged.

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
