Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

We are recruiting a student for doctoral education. For more information regarding doctoral (PhD) education, see: http://www.ki.se/doctoral.

Research group
The position is placed in the research group of Jonas Frisén at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. The laboratory is located in the newly established Biomedicum building at Karolinska Institutet. We study cell generation during development in the adult body, with special interests in the central nervous system, heart, immune system and prostate. We are interested in the extent, lineage relationships and functional role of cell generation in physiological and pathological situations in mice and humans.

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic doctoral student to study cell generation after spinal cord injury in mice. The approach uses genetic fate mapping, genetic modifications in transgenic animals, behavioural, optogenetic, histological and molecular analyses. This will allow the identification of molecular pathways that direct cell differentiation and affect the functional recovery after spinal cord injury.

The project and the duties include to carry out behavioural assessment after spinal cord injury in mice and performing optogenetic analysis of axonal conductance in the injured mouse spinal cord. Experience of any of these methods and analyses is highly valued.
