Karolinska Institutet, Department of Oncology-Pathology, Group Kallioniemi

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Research group Olli Kallioniemi
This position resides in the research group of Olli Kallioniemi, Director of Science for Life Laboratory, Professor of Molecular Precision Medicine, Dept. Oncology and Pathology, Karolinska Institutet. The group is located at the Science for Life Laboratory Solna Campus.  We apply precision systems cancer medicine in a translational and clinical setting to assign and optimize targeted treatments for individual cancer patients. Our disease focus spans from acute myeloid leukemia (AML), to ovarian and urological cancer (prostate, kidney and bladder). Systems medicine is applied to identify targeted therapies and drug combinations for individual cancer patients using genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic profiling along with functional ex vivo drug testing on primary patient-derived cells (PDCs) from cancer patients. We engage in team science and multi-disciplinary collaborations with other research groups, as well as with pathologists, clinicians, and bioinformaticians and compter scientists, both locally at Oncology-Pathology and at KI as well as in a variety of national, Nordic and international networks. We apply the range technology platforms available at SciLifeLab. For more information: https://www.scilifelab.se/researchers/olli-kallioniemi/

Qualifications of The Applicant and Task Description
The position will involve an opportunity to co-lead the day-to-day work in the group at the Department of Oncollogy Pathology at Karolinska and in the SciLifeLab community as well as practice precision cancer medicine research in a translational and clinical setting. The successful candidate is an independent, creative and motivated individual with a documented ability to carry out experimental research, but also skilled in project management and leadership, grant writing and reporting, has excellent communication skills in spoken and written English. Experience in both laboratory work and data analysis is essential. The candidate should have experience in high throughput chemical biology, drug discovery or testing, HTS assay development or high content microscopy. The ideal candidate should also have practical experience in HTS data analysis, as well as in the systems biology data analysis, quality control, integration and visualization of large-scale data sets. When assessing applicants, we stress research expertise and demonstrated ability in collaborative team science, including clinical collaborations and networking in a community of scientists, clinicians and industry.

Besides the overall tasks of co-leading the day-to-day work in the research group, the specific tasks for this position involve i) the development of primary cell culture models for cancer and their application in drug testing, ii) characterization of the models and the original human tumors iii) application of these models and data to precision cancer medicine projects in collaboration with health care and the industry (diagnostic, drug development and IT). The candidate is expected to carry out project management tasks such as contributing to grant writing, planning budgeting and reporting, monitoring of deliverables and milestones in a project, as well as interacting with all the research, clinical and industrial partners.
