Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Molecular Structural Biology

Area of responsibilities / description of the work
A postdoctoral researcher position is available at the Division of molecular Structural Biology at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden for a motivated young researcher wishing to join a multidisciplinary project between the research group at the Karolinska Institutet (Division of Molecular Structural Biology, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics) and the Medical University of Vienna (Department of Molecular Neurosciences, Center for Brain Research). The collaborative project is supported by a grant from Novo Nordisk.
In the recent years the intensive investigation uncovered the importance of the calcium-sensor protein secretagogin for hormone release in panreactic beta-cells and in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. (Malenczyk K. et al. EMBO J. 2017 Jul 14;36(14):2107-2125 PMID:28637794 / Romanov RA. et al. EMBO J. 2015 Jan 2;34(1):36-54. PMID:25430741 /Alpár A. et al. Cell Signal. 2012 Feb;24(2):378-87. Review.). The proteins involved in these regulatory pathways and will be studied to uncover the molecular basis of the protein-protein interactions involved in the regulatory network orchestrated by secretagogin in hormone releasing cells. The candidate will be expected to produce recombinant proteins and identify and characterize protein-protein interactions, uncover their biochemical and biophysical characteristics and study these in biological context.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry or structural biology. Documented experience in characterizing protein-protein interactions and/or x-ray crystallography is an advantage. The successful candidate will be expected to establish heterologous protein expression carry out large scale protein purification, characterize the protein-protein interactions in vitro, and participate in the structural studies on the protein-protein complexes. Good communication skills and an ability to interact socially and scientifically with other researchers / students in the laboratory, and with collaborators in various networks are essential. A strong publication record is considered as an important merit.
