The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.
Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb
We are seeking an enthusiastic research assistant to run fMRI in our ongoing research studies.
Division
The position is shared between Centre for Eating Disorders Innovation (CEDI) and the Department of Women's and Children's Health (KBH) at Karolinska Institutet.
Duties
At CEDI, you will be part of the CREAT-project team (PI Professor Cynthia Bulik) and involved in the neuroimaging component of the project. The project aim to study multiple factors associated with anorexia nervosa (AN) in discordant monozygotic twins where one of the twins has AN. The MRI acquisition will be performed on a 3-Tesla whole body scanner (GE 750) with both an 8-channel, as well as a 32-channel head coil. Structural brain scans for morphometric analyses as well as functional scans such as resting state fMRI and task-based fMRI will be performed during the participants 2-day stay at Karolinska.
At KBH, you will be part of the research team addressing the neurobiology of gender identity, sexual orientation, and self-identity in general. The focus is on the perception of own body in the concept of self. The study will be conducted both at the Karolinska Institute (PI Professor Ivanka Savic) and at UCLA (PI Professor Jamie Feusner). Our extended team (including UCLA) consists of physicians, physicists, engineers, neuroscientists, psychologists and biomedical experts, and our laboratories have expertise in functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging, and psychophysics. We have MEG and TMS facilities. We have access to two state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI scanners (both sites).
Entry requirements
The ideal candidate will have experience in cognitive neuroscience, human brain imaging (MRI), and insight in experimental psychology. The applicant should have experience in conducting fMRI experiments (eg presentation, psychtoolbox or similar) as well as analysis, (eg FSL and SPM analyses of fMRI, cortical thickness, DTI analyses) and an appreciation of methodological issues in cognitive brain imaging. The applicant should further be thorough, efficient, a good communicator, and enjoy working as part of a diverse, energetic, interdisciplinary team. He/she should be able to work with two projects simultaneously, needs to be fluent in Swedish language and have strong verbal and written English skills.
The candidate is expected to work within the general framework of the research program and actively contribute to teaching and improving MR methodology, with respect to data post processing/analysis. Applicants are expected to have knowledge of post processing and analysis of MRI data. The position is for 1 year.
Application process
The application is to be submitted in the Varbi recruitment system.
