At the Department of Oncology-Pathology, basic, translational, and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer are carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working in the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved, and we have around 110 Ph.D. students.
The position is within Professor Johan Hartman’s research group. The successful candidate will work on unique cancer patient cohorts and datasets. Similarly, the candidate will have a chance to perform top-level breast cancer translational studies together with our collaborators both in Sweden and internationally.
The applicant needs to have good competence in designing and leading projects within the cancer medicine research field, with special focus on breast cancer and translational pathology, as well as possessing good supervision experiences, teamwork abilities, and cooperation within a dynamic group of scientists and clinicians with broad expertise. The applicant will help supervise Ph.D. students and postdocs. The successful candidate has good knowledge of breast cancer disease and precision oncology/diagnostics, as well as relevant expertise in methodologies.
The successful applicant will lead studies aimed at improving breast cancer patient segmentation and precision treatment using multimodal approaches and phenotypic data, with a main focus on intratumoral heterogeneity. The work responsibilities include project design, experiment performance, results interpretation, and presentation of findings in the form of scientific publications, grant applications, and meetings and conference abstracts. The individual is expected to oversee the organization of research projects conducted by other Ph.D. students and postdocs. The candidate is expected to interact with many collaborators and contribute to the network's efficient functioning.
For employment as Senior Research Specialist at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Guidelines for non-teaching positions at Karolinska Institutet are applied in relation to the established profile of employment.
To be eligible for employment as a Senior Research Specialist, in addition to holding a PhD, or having a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, the applicant must have demonstrated good level of research expertise with significant scientific output. The applicant must also have demonstrated a good scientific independence to which their own contribution has been significant and a research plan of high quality with clear future potential.
The applicant should have authored 15 original publications, the majority of which must be based on his/her postdoctoral research. Of these, at least two must be as first or last author, of which at least one as last author, conducted after PhD graduation and without any of his/her doctoral supervisors as co-authors.
Additional requirements
The successful applicant should also have good knowledge of breast cancer diagnostic routines, experience in research documents management (ethical approval, biobank applications, and patient informed consent, etc.), sensitive patient data management expertise, excellent communication skills, and experience in collaborating with both academia and industrial partners.
The applicant should have hands-on research experiences using various in vitro diagnostic tools and platforms. Demonstrated experience in handling and utilizing various types of cancer patient materials for translational research. Demonstrated experience in primary cancer cell 3D culture models and drug profiling methods. Demonstrated experience in computational pathology and spatial transcriptomics. Experience in cancer treatment resistance, intratumoral heterogeneity, and immuno-oncology research. Experience should be documented by scientific publications.
