Our research group, “Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery”, includes graduated researchers, PhD candidates, biostatisticians, administrator, and medical students. We conduct clinical and epidemiological research examining diseases and surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract, i.e. the oesophagus and stomach, with a focus on cancer and associated diseases and procedures. We are involved in international collaborations and networks. We have a structured approach to developing new studies, and run research seminar series, journal clubs, methods clubs and PhD courses. In the last external assessment of all research constellations at KI, our group was rated ‘Outstanding’ in cancer research, i.e. the highest score possible. The group leader is Jesper Lagergren, professor and consultant of surgery and member of the Nobel Assembly at KI, and professor and consultant surgeon at King’s College London. The Principal Researcher will lead and conduct high-quality epidemiological research mainly within the area of oesophageal and gastric cancer. The databases mainly originate from merged national health data registries in Sweden and other Nordic countries as well as clinical data collections.
You are an experienced and skilled researcher with extensive and well-documented experience in epidemiological research in upper gastrointestinal cancer, i.e. oesophageal and gastric cancer. You have documented expert knowledge in epidemiology, biostatistics, and registry-based research, and are will conduct successful scientific research and attract competitive research grants. You will mainly focus on research, but teaching is also expected. The teaching will include supervision of PhD candidates and lectures at seminars, journal clubs and PhD courses. You are supposed to collaborate and communicate well with other members of the group.
To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding. The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.
To be qualified the applicant must have:
1) An undergraduate degree in a medical subject combined with a PhD in a medical subject or a corresponding degree from a university abroad.
2) Completed a postdoc period, have had some years of experience as assistant professor or similar, and be docent or have achieved a corresponding competence level abroad.
3) Many publications in internationally leading medical journals within the field of upper gastrointestinal cancer, including several as first and last author.
4) Documented methodological skills in modern cancer epidemiology and biostatistics.
5) Experience of PhD supervision as main supervisor to completed PhD exam.
6) Experience of organising and teaching in courses for PhD candidates.
We give the main weight to scientific skills. We particularly stress the need for experience in epidemiological research of upper gastrointestinal cancer. The successful candidate should have excellent competence in analysis and interpretation of extensive human research data, and successfully have published scientific articles and received grants. Documented knowledge in upper gastrointestinal diseases and clinical medicine is expected. Important personal characteristics include curiosity, engagement, social competence and collaboration skills. Excellent skills in written and oral English are required.
