Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Center for Hematology and Regenerative medicine, HERM, is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on translational hematology and immunology. HERM is in the NEO building and consists of a mix of clinical and preclinical research groups, each with a focus on clinically relevant questions in hematology, stem cell biology and immunology, including basic immunology, immunodeficiency and transfusion immunology.

Recruiting research group

Professor Petter Höglund leads a translational immunology group with a focus on natural killer (NK) cells, platelets and neutrophils. See https://ki.se/en/medh/petter-hoglund-group for more information. The group is now looking for a postdoctoral scientist to study platelet biology in healthy individuals and in patients with various diseases.

Platelets are easily activated by experimental handling and new techniques are needed to overcome this hurdle. The task of the project is therefore to take platelet research to the next level. Novel multicolor flow cytometry panels are needed in which combinations of markers for function and phenotype can be included. In addition, the task is to develop new methods for platelet function, in which single platelets and platelets in bulk conditions can be assayed, testing the hypothesis that subsets of platelets with differential functions, specifically hyperfunctional platelets, exist and have unique biological roles.

Your mission

The main responsibility will be to develop and conduct independent research projects at the postdoctoral level. The candidate is expected to bring new knowledge in how to study platelets and also to support ongoing platelet projects. Apart from platelet-specific methods, laboratory work in the group includes all aspects of an immunology lab, such as molecular biology and cell culture.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Applicants must have adequate university education in biomedicine or cell biology. The candidate must have a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. The successful candidate is very well-organized, responsible, collaborative and likes to work in a dynamic environment with diverse tasks.

The applicant should demonstrate practical experience in molecular biology, cell biology and flow cytometry techniques. For the latter, advanced knowledge regarding multicolor FACS analysis of platelets is a requirement, and experience with various methods, traditional and novel ones, to study platelet function is necessary. Bioinformatics experience is a merit, to facilitate analysis of large datasets in flow cytometry and to prepare for experiments using transcriptional profiling of platelet subsets. Good collaborate skills, independence, communication skills and computer skills are required.  Good knowledge in written and spoken English is required.

Type of position

The employment will be in the form of a postdoctoral position for two years.
