Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoc with skills in immunology and computational biology to join the team of Andrea Ponzetta at Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM). The project will be performed in synergy with clinical collaborators at the Karolinska University Hospital and focuses on unconventional T cell biology.

Division

At CIM our research focuses on the human immune system and we offer an engaging and international work environment. CIM is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge and one of the leading translational research centers in immunity and infectious diseases in Europe. CIM is located within Karolinska Institutet newly established research facility, ANA Futura, and offers excellent infrastructure at the forefront of research.

The Ponzetta team focuses on the mechanisms driving the endogenous innate immune responses against infections and tumors (Lourda et al, PNAS 2021, Maucourant et al, Sci Immunol 2020). We have a specific interest in unconventional T cells, a class of lymphocytes endowed with both innate and adaptive immune functions. Double negative T ɑβ (DNTɑβ) cells are a poorly studied unconventional T cell subset, which can trigger antitumor immunity in solid cancers (Ponzetta et al, Cell 2019).

Duties

The successful candidate will join our team to define the functional hallmarks of human DNTɑβ cells. The project involves the study of fundamental elements of DNTɑβ biology, such as their anatomical distribution, their maturation trajectory and their target specificity, as well as their relevance in pathologic settings (e.g. cancer). The postdoctoral fellow will generate and analyze datasets using bulk and single cell transcriptomics, high dimensional flow cytometry, and functional in vitro screenings. The successful candidate is expected to take a strong lead in the project design and management, and to collaborate with other team members. The candidate is also expected to report on the scientific results by writing scientific papers, attending scientific meetings, and effectively communicate with peers. The ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment, and to engage in continuous professional development is a must.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

To qualify, the applicant must have a PhD degree in immunology with first-author publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals. A strong candidate should preferably have a solid background in the study of unconventional T cells. Merit is given to applicants who have previous experience with NGS data generation/analysis and with immunological methods (multiparametric flow cytometry and cell sorting). The candidate should be highly motivated, have good communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team of international researchers. Fluency in English is a requirement. Emphasis will be placed on scientific track record, past experience with immunological methods as well as personal suitability.

Location: Flemingsberg

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
