Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in Dr. Francois Lallemend research group, which explores the specific neural pathways underlying sensory perception and their central integration in the auditory, vestibular, and sensorimotor systems. The Lallemend lab is located at Karolinska Institutet and is part of a very dynamic and interactive scientific environment in the new building Biomedicum which includes 5 departments. The position will be placed in the Department of Neuroscience, which comprises several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states.

Your mission

The postdoctoral fellow that joins our team will be investigating the neuronal substrate that perceive and/or transmit the various sensory information about our body movements. The focus will be on the vestibular and proprioceptive systems in mice and on using genetic tools, virus tracing technology, histology, and behavioral assays to reveal the different sensory channels and associated central circuits responsible for controlling body motion and reflexes. The lab is also making use of next-generation sequencing for studying the molecular changes associated with sensory systems plasticity. In particular, the laboratory has discovered new populations of sensory neurons (Nat Commun, 2018, Nat Commun, 2021, and unpublished data), and the candidate will characterize the physiological properties of these cells and access novel enabling technologies including opto- and chemo-genetics, advanced mouse genetic models and more, which allows for a systematic strategy to explore their function.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated, driven, inquisitive, enthusiastic person interested in our area of research, and ready to explore new avenues in science. The candidate should have a collaborative approach to research, working productively in a team and contributing to a good social environment in the laboratory. The applicant should have a strong background in neuroscience and circuits analysis, and associated good publication record; histology, behavioral tests and surgery is appreciated.

Division

The Lallemend research group is interested in unveiling the complexity of the peripheral sensory systems and how various (multimodal) sensory inputs are processed centrally (in e.g. spinal cord and brainstem) for controlling our behavior. The lab is also greatly interested in the potential plasticity of sensory systems in adult and how this can affect sensory processing and performance, or lead to sensory deficits with ageing.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct cutting edge medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post-doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna (Stockholm)

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • Name of two references

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
