Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Our research group has recently discovered a novel tumor-suppressing metabolic enzyme that may be an important, previously unrecognized factor in human cancer. We now seek an innovative and talented postdoctoral fellow to drive the pioneering studies of this enzyme in human cancer. You will work within a multidisciplinary team of experimental and computational scientists, and together with national and international collaborators. This groundbreaking project is a part of a larger research programme targeting the tumor-suppressing enzyme to combat human cancer.

Division

The Nilsson lab has broad expertise in cellular metabolism, with a focus on cancer metabolism, where our ultimate goal is to discover and exploit cancer-associated metabolic enzymes for cancer therapeutics. We are part of the Department of Medicine (Solna), one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet, combining clinical and preclinical/experimental sciences. Our Cardiovascular Medicine Division features a rich variety of metabolism-oriented research, including metabolic syndrome, immunometabolism and cancer metabolism.

Duties

Your mission will be to identify the precise form of the tumor-suppressing enzyme that occurs in cancer cells, and develop methods for measuring the protein in human tumors. This will involve purification of the protein from cells, tumors and normal tissues by immunoprecipitation or chromatography methods; determining posttranslational modifications and verifying their function in cell models, for example by introducing mutations; and using the resulting data to develop high quality antibody-based assays for the protein. You will work together with scientists in our group tackling related aspects of the tumor-suppressing enzyme, and will have access to resources and expertise for mass spectrometry and custom antibody generation through collaborators

Entry requirements

We seek a highly motivated, creative, and independent postdoctoral scientist with ability to drive groundbreaking studies in a new research field. The successful candidate should have strong expertise in molecular biology and protein biochemistry, including protein purification methods, immunoprecipitation techniques, and antibody-based methods such as immunoblotting and immunofluorescence imaging. Experience with genetic methods such as lentiviral transfection for protein overexpression and knockdown in human cells is an advantage. Strong aptitude for teamwork and excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are required.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group of Roland Nilsson. Our laboratories are situated in the brand new Bioclinicum research building at the heart of the Solna campus, in close proximity to both Karolinska Hospital and the main research facilities of Karolinska Institutet.

Type of scholarship

This appointment will be for two years, with a possible transition to employment for an additional two years.

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
