Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Cancer is a complex disease that affects a large part of the population. We strive to find new and innovative approaches to cancer treatment, interdisciplinary research that spans from the molecular to the organismal level. The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Solna conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 81 PhD students, 77 postdoctoral researchers and 32 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, translational, national, and international collaborations.

Division
The work in Michael Landreh's research group is focused on the development and application of protein engineering and mass spectrometry to understand the structure-function relationship of challenging protein systems, including disordered proteins, membrane proteins, and amyloids, which play key roles in cancer and neurodegeneration. The lab includes facilities for protein expression and characterisation as well as state-of-the-art mass spectrometry (orbitrap, time of flight, and ion mobility). We furthermore collaborate closely with the labs of Sir David Lane and Marie Arsenian-Henriksson at MTC, who routinely employ cutting-edge live-cell microscopy, cell sorting, and animal models to study molecular mechanisms in cancer. This environment enables us to combine structural biology with cellular disease models to study the function of proteins from the molecular to the organismal level.

Your mission
The applicant will work on the expression and characterization of disordered cancer proteins using a variety of molecular biology and biophysical techniques, with the aim of elucidating the modular structures and activity. The focus of the postdoctoral project is to continue ongoing work in our lab on the role of disorder in the tumor suppressor p53 and the oncogene MYC. The postdoctoral researcher will utilize a recently engineered spider silk domain to modulate translation and structure of both proteins, analyse their structures using mass spectrometry, EM, and NMR, if applicable, and correlate structural changes with biological activity using live-cell imaging and viability assays.

Your profile
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
