Do you want to contribute to improving human health?
Studies on how common bacterial infections are established and spread are important to improve global health, especially in endemic regions where bacterial infections have a large burden. This position offers the possibility to contribute to the fight against bacterial pathogens with access to state-of-the art methods.

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, translational, national and international collaborations.

Your mission
The Sjöling lab at the department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology seeks to employ senior research specialists in molecular studies of pathogenic bacteria. The Sjöling lab studies host interactions and environmental dissemination of the major diarrheal pathogenic bacteria enterotoxigenic E. coli as well as well as research on environmental bacteria with a particular focus on studies with Shewanella spp. The group also focuses on transmission of antibiotic resistance in the environment and studies of microbiota interactions with pathogenic species.

The candidate will perform independent research in these areas and is expected to contribute to guidance of students, apply for grants and present findings orally and in peer-reviewed publications. The senior research specialist is expected to lead his/her own projects, collaborate within other projects and guide students. It is expected that the candidate applies for grants and participate in microbiology teaching at courses given at MTC.

Your profile
The candidate is eligible to be employed as a Senior Research Specialist if an PhD has been obtained in microbiology or a related field and has the special knowledge that is important with regard to the tasks. Experience from coordinating and leading research projects is essential, in particular from environmental and clinical microbiology. The candidate should have broad experience in research of gastrointestinal, extraintestinal and environmental pathogenic bacteria. A record on successful acquisition of external funding for projects related to these areas will be regarded as a merit.

It is essential that the candidate master molecular tools and analyses including qPCR, library preparation, whole-genome sequencing, metagenome sequencing, RNA-seq data on bacteria and human, cell and tissue culture, and molecular microbiology techniques including molecular cloning, protein purification, epitope tagging and mutagenesis of candidate genes in diverse bacterial models.

Experience in proteomic and metabolomic bioinformatic analysis, multi-omics data integration and whole-genome association studies is an advantage. Specific knowledge of bacterial anaerobic metabolism, biofilm physiology, anti-biofilm strategies, bacterial inter- and intra-cellular signaling pathways and experience of studies on pathogenic E. coli and Shewanella spp. is a merit.

A strong track record in publications in the relevant areas, ability to collaborate, leadership abilities and personal qualifications for the position will be evaluated.
