New research area, new opportunity! Join us for studying RNA editing in health and disease!
The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.
Division
The research group of Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström works on the molecular mechanism of immunoglobulin class switch recombination (CSR), genetics of primary immunodeficiency and B-cell lymphomagenesis. The research laboratory is located at campus Flemingsberg. For more information about the group, please see https://ki.se/en/bionut/research-group-qiang-pan-hammarstrom
Duties
The selected postdoctoral fellow candidate will work in our multidisciplinary team of researchers including clinicians, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians, and will be supervised by Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström at Karolinska Institutet (KI). The postdoctoral study will be primary based in KI, but will have possibilities to visit Broad Institute in Cambridge for additional training in technology and bioinformatics.
The main tasks for the successful candidate are:
1) Characterization of RNA editing events in cells from healthy individuals as well as from disease models using next generation sequencing technologies. The disease models include B cell lymphoma, primary immunodeficiency and infectious disease such as Covid-19.
2) Validation of RNA editing events by site-specific modification using the Cas13-based RNA editing system.
3) Develop new therapeutic approaches based on RNA-editing technologies.
4) The postdoctoral fellow is expected to assume a major role in the writing of scientific publications and grant applications and contribute to supervise PhD and master students in the group.
Qualifications
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate who are interested in applying new technologies and tools for understanding the mechanisms underlying human diseases and for development of novel therapies for patients. The applicant should have been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree in medicine, biotechnology, immunology, genetics, cancer biology, molecular biology, infectious disease or areas relevant to the announced position. He/she should have achieved the corresponding scientific competence, with first-authored publications in internationally leading journals in the corresponding fields. Extensive research experience in next generation sequencing data analysis and state-of-art molecular and cellular biology techniques is required. The applicant must be able to work productively via collaborative interactions with team members. Furthermore, the candidate should possess excellent communicating and writing skills in English.
Bases of assessment
We stress scientific excellence and potential when assessing applicants. The applicants’ track record based on curriculum vitae and bibliography will be assessed. Evidence for independence, innovation and the capacity to work and publish in a multidisciplinary environment is weighted in ranking the applicants. Reference letters will be requested from the PhD supervisor(s) and considered from selected candidates.
Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Location: Flemingsberg
Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:
The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
