At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Postdoctoral Researcher in Clinical Metabolomics and Bioinformatics with focus on inflammatory mediated Pain signalling (scholarship)
Division
As a member of our team, your task will be to investigate the role of small molecules in pain signalling using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics. The aim is to understand the regulation of pain transmission in relation to persistent pain. Work will be conducted in Dr. Camilla Svensson’s research group that has a focus on finding treatment strategies for inflammatory mediated chronic pain states and in Dr. Kim Kultima’s research group that has a focus on exploring metabolomics technologies for improved healthcare. The ultimate goal is to identify new drug targets and develop novel drug mediators for the treatment of chronic pain states. To achieve this goal we also perform additional behavioural pharmacology, molecular biology and immunohistochemistry applied to both in vivo and in vitro systems.
The applicant will spend part-time at Karolinska Institute and part-time at Uppsala University at the mass spectrometry unit located at Dept. of Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology (Uppsala University Hospital).

Duties
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team investigating pain mechanisms in conditions such as fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. The focus will be on experimental planning, bioinformatics and data analysis of un-targeted and targeted mass spectrometry-based metabolomics data generated from human biofluids (CSF, serum and plasma) of patients suffering from chronic pain states. You will be working closely together with technicians, chemists, mass spectrometry experts and preclinical and clinical researchers with a mission to increase our ability to study pain from a translational aspect.
Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Other requirements
We seek a highly motivated candidate, with an outstanding completed PhD thesis and a strong drive for a future career in research. The candidate must have acquired expertise in the field of advanced bioinformatics in mass spectrometry-based applications. To qualify, the candidate must have a strong background in bioinformatics for example an MSc degree in Bioinformatics or similarly. Documented practical experience of scripting using R, statistical and bioinformatics analyses of metabolimcs data and/or proteomics data is considered a strong merit. Experience in cloud-based solutions for data analysis as well as workflow engines is considered a strong merit. Also, good experience in metabolomics methods for sample preparation using mass spectrometry and hands-on experience using high-resolution Thermo Q-Exactive LC-MS/MS is considered a strong merit as well as an understanding of the molecular basis of pain signalling.
Documented oral and written proficiency in English is required. Good recommendations from previous supervisors/teachers is a requirement. We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team player to our group. The project involves collaborations with various experts, so we are looking for individuals who excel at working independently and, at the same time have the interpersonal and communication skills to succeed at working in a multidisciplinary team. Apart from metabolomics data analyses, the candidate is expected to take part of other aspects of experimental planning and data analysis of data generated in vivo and in vitro studies, as well as presentation and preparation of publications. Personal suitability and scientific expertise are highly valued. The applicant must be proficient in English, both spoken and written.
Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
