The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.

Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.

The Lallemend lab is interested in understanding how different populations of neurons diversify and
assembly into interconnected, functional circuits that control our behavior. For more information, please visit http://ki.se/en/neuro/lallemend-laboratory

We are seeking a highly motivated, independent and talented researcher to study the development and function of the cochlear nervous system.

Division

The lab is interested in understanding the molecular principles underlying the neuronal specification and neural circuit formation in the peripheral nervous system. More specifically, we propose to dissect anatomically and molecularly the construction of the tridimensional structure of the neural networks that underlie the locomotor behavior and hearing process and to reveal the physiological functions of still enigmatic neuronal populations in the cochlear system. In addition, we propose to shed light onto how developmental processes make use of either stochastic or predetermined molecular mechanisms or both simultaneously during the formation of the nervous system.

Recent publications from the lab: Cell. 2009; EMBO J. 2012; Trends Neurosci. 2012; EMBO J. 2013; Nature Commun. 2013; J Neurosci. 2013

Duties

Combining mouse genetics to molecular biology and advanced genomics, the successful candidate will identify (by single-cell RNAseq) the transcriptomic fingerprint of the two types of cochlear neurons and engineer new mouse lines to provide versatile tools for the study of the molecular programs that control the development of the cochlear nervous system. Also, through DTA-based genetic ablation, the candidate will study for the first time the physiological function of the type II cochlear neurons.

Candidates should, a part from the scholarship entry requirements:

- Have published at least one peer-reviewed first author paper in the field of development (neuro-) biology.

- Have a strong background in cell/molecular biology and mouse genetics; experience in bioinformatics is a plus.

- Have Experience in rodent tissue collection.

Karolinska Institute offers a stimulating and vibrant work environment for neuroscientists/cell biologists and great opportunities for development of an academic career.

Entry requirements

Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying. One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.

Type of scholarship

Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies.  This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within five years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt. The amount is set for a maximum of six months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English:

  • Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj )
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)

The application is to be submitted in the NetRecruiter system.
