Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Solna, Immunology and Allergy division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The Immunology and Allergy division at the Department of Medicine, Solna performs research on different aspect of allergy and autoimmune diseases. Our research group (PI: Eduardo Villablanca) will develop new in vivo models to study the function of genes associated with autoimmune diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). My lab occupies 750 sq. ft of laboratory space on the L8:03 section of the Center of Molecular Medicine (CMM) building at the Karolinska Institutet (KI) Solna. Flow cytometers, confocal microscopy and all the basic equipment to perform the proposed research are freely available for our lab members. Central building support offices, security, supply areas, materials management, and mail operations. The CMM is also home to geneticists and immunologists who are leaders in uncovering new disease loci using GWAS in the context of multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, the CMM research environment provides a nexus of investigators who provide complementary expertise towards shared goals: uncovering the genetic basis of disease, understanding the functional significance of discovered disease loci, and translating these insights into future therapies.

Duties
Beside “gut-centric” conditions, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), emerging evidence indicate that disruption of intestinal homeostasis have systemic consequences. Hence, understanding the gut as a place of immune cell education will give us important insights into the etiology of diseases, including extra-intestinal disorders. The main goal of this project is to investigate how B cells and DC contribute to maintain intestinal homeostasis and tissue repair upon injury. The successful candidate will utilize newly generated genetically modified mouse models to investigate the requirements of novel candidate genes in the establishment of intestinal homeostasis. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to work independently, to take the responsibilities of the design, execution, organization, report and development of the research project.

Entry requirements
Our lab has an opening for a highly creative and motivated postdoctoral scientist with an interest in mucosal immunology. We look for a candidate with documented laboratory research experience particularly in mouse models of intestinal inflammation, human myeloid cells and B cell biology, culture in vitro and multi-parameter flow cytometry in the context of mucosal immunology. Experience in single cell RNA-seq data interpretation and analysis would be an advantage. The position will require independent work at the laboratory as well as extensive collaboration with clinicians and other experimental groups. Fluency in both oral and written English is necessary. Documented ability to analyze and present results orally and written is important. Additional requirements include outstanding communications skills and the ability to generate new ideas and innovate.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
