Karolinska Institutet, the Department of Medicine, Huddinge

We are recruiting a student for doctoral education. For more information regarding doctoral (PhD) education, see: http://www.ki.se/doctoral

Research group
The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises seven units, three research centers and around 70 independent research groups. Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre (ICMC) is a unique and innovative collaboration committed to advancing cardiovascular and metabolic disease research. The aim of the center is to advance the understanding of cardiovascular and metabolic disease within three main strategic areas: Cardiac Regeneration, Islet Health (Diabetes) and Diabetic Nephropathy.

The position available is in the laboratory of Professors Bo Angelin/Mats Rudling. The Department is located at Karolinska Institutet South Campus in Huddinge. The aim of the research group is to understand how lipoprotein metabolism is regulated in humans by endogenous (genetic) and exogenous (hormones, diet) mechanisms and how this may influence diseases such as cardiovascular, hepatic and metabolic diseases.

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
Diabetic dyslipidaemia involves both quantitative and qualitative circulating lipoprotein abnormalities that result in a shift towards a more atherogenic lipid profile. The interstitium represents the immediate surrounding environment of most cells in the body and its composition and functional properties should therefore be of high relevance in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The goal of this project is to further elucidate the link between peripheral lipoprotein metabolism occurring in both blood and interstitium and the potential mechanisms contributing to accelerated atherogenesis in T2D. The project will encompass studies of the functionality of lipoproteins, reverse cholesterol transport and peripheral cholesterol metabolism in both humans and animals. The PhD student will be involved in planning/designing and performing experiments; analyzing/interpreting the data and presenting the results at national and international meetings.
