Karolinska Institutet, the department of Medicine, Huddinge

Applications are invited for postdoctoral position in human fat tissue biology in the research group of Assoc Prof Jurga Laurencikiene.

Research environment
The Lipid Laboratory at the Department of Medicine (H7), Karolinska Institutet focuses on studies of human adipose tissue and its pathophysiological role in promoting metabolic complications such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension. The laboratory is led by Prof. Mikael Rydén and is composed of about 15 scientists and support staff. We have a long track record in the field of translational medicine and several international collaborations resulting in important contributions to the research field [1-6]. Our work is based on examinations in large, carefully phenotyped prospective clinical cohorts and on well-established in vitro cell models using a number of standard and state-of-art methodologies (e.g. single cell RNA sequencing, multicolor flow cytometry, high throughput screens and cell phenotype analysis) as well as in-house developed techniques. Recently we became involved in a large collaborative efforts to determine the immunometabolic milieu of human adipose tissue and its role in adipocyte differentiation, adipose tissue morphology and the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Position
A postdoctoral position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in molecular and cell biology.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence in the field of molecular biology or biomedicine.

Requirements
The applicant, ideally applying for his/her first or second postdoctoral position, should have experience from work in a translational research environment and excellent skills in standard molecular biology techniques as well as cell culture work including primary cell systems. Experience in handling analyses of large data sets, e.g. arrays and/or metabolomics data and/or experience in flow cytometry and advanced immunomicroscopy is a merit as well as knowledge of transcriptional regulation and practical experience from in vitro assays of cell function. A background in metabolism and/or immunology is meritorious but not an absolute requirement. As our research is performed with a translational perspective, our work implies handling of human samples and close collaboration with clinicians. We are looking for curious, ambitious, self-motivated, focused and enthusiastic person that is eager to learn and that have the capacity to collaborate in a team.

What we can offer
We can offer an excellent environment for translational medicine and research at the forefront in the field of human metabolism. All research groups in lipid lab work closely together including a group of Prof Peter Arner, a nestor in human adipose tissue field. Finally, our international collaborations enable short-term stays in other labs and we expect that generated findings are presented by the fellow at international meetings. The position is for 2 years with the possibility for an additional 2 year-prolongation. Duties are to be taken on as soon as possible.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
