Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education is conducted in collaboration with Region Stockholm as well as other research groups from Karolinska Institutet and other universities.

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a translational molecular imaging technique increasingly used in biomedical research. It allows the investigation of bio-chemical transformations of drugs or other molecules in living systems and thereby offers possibilities to study physiology, molecular biology, energy metabolism, drug-receptor or drug-enzyme interactions etc. Moreover, PET is important not only from the diagnostic point of view, it can also play an important role in the discovery of new drugs. The PET research group at Karolinska Institutet is one of the leading research groups in the world in this area.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
Microfluidic technology rapidly growing in the field of synthetic chemistry. The main advantage of the microfluidic technique is the high surface to volume ratio, which can increase the speed of the labeling reaction and improve the overall efficiency of the labeling reaction process. In addition, of that the easily shielding of the small microfluidic device has made it in many regards, the ideal platform for the rapid type of radiolabeling required for PET.

The aim of this project to train the next generation of chemists with expertise in isotopic labeling and advanced medicinal chemistry through a first-class taught and research training program combined with a highly interactive plan; i) to develop automated cGMP‐compliant 11C, 18F, 68Ga labeled radiosynthesis using iMiLAB radiochemistry module and to apply the new labeling methods to drugs currently in development in order to provide solutions to the most pressing problems in drug innovation ii) to produce [11C]CH3I using plasma generation technology in a closed system to comply with GMP production of radioligands for clinical and preclinical use and iii) the 3rd aim of this study is based on the hypothesis of producing 68Ga with a 68Zn based target solution and further labeling of PET radioligands by 68Ga isotope using iMiLAB radiochemistry module.

We offer a first class education at Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with our colleagues in the Isotopics network.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education
In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

It is your responsibility to certify eligibility by following the instructions on the web page Entry requirements (eligibility) for doctoral education.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

Follow the instructions on the web page Entry requirements (eligibility) for doctoral education.

*If you claim equivalent knowledge, follow the instructions on the web page Assessing equivalent knowledge for general eligibility for doctoral education.

B) Specific eligibility requirement
You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  • Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Follow the instructions on the web page English language requirements for doctoral education.

Verification of your documents
Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent. Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.

Skills and personal qualities
We are looking for one motivated and skilled organic chemists/chemical engineer that can help us take the next steps in the development of methods for introducing 11C, 18F, 68Ga into radioligands for PET imaging.

It is desired that you have a science Master´s degree in Organic Chemistry or Chemical engineering.

Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

Application process
Submit your application and supporting documents through the Varbi recruitment system. Use the button in the top right corner and follow the instructions.

Your application should contain the following documents:
