Karolinska Institutet, Institutet för miljömedicin

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Research group
Our research team is interested in the molecular mechanisms, which control the activation of microglia towards a selective phenotype exerting unique functions in the healthy or pathologic brain. Our investigations are performed in various models of human diseases ranging from cancers to neurodegenerative disorders (for example of our research, see Burguillos et al., 2011, Nature; Shen et al., 2016 Nature Immunology). The research group is led by Bertrand Joseph, and located at the Karolinska Institutet Solna Campus.

Duties
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist with interest and expertise in microglia field to work on a project focused on signaling pathways controlling microglia activation in the context of diseases.

Qualifications
Applications are welcome from scientists with experience in the fields of microglia and transcription/epigenetics. Expertise in the above mentioned field(s) will be considered as strong advantage. Candidates should have an excellent track record and experience with standard molecular and cell biology techniques. We are searching for an experienced postdoc who can work independently and develop his/her own ideas and visions. Candidates should be highly motivated, creative, and have strong communication skills. The ability to express oneself in speech and writing in English at a high level and interact effectively and work productively in a team will be considered important. Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
