Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.

Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.

Division

The areas of research in the research group of Associate Professor Andrea Carmine Belin are neurological disorders with a focus on the primary headache disorder cluster headache. The research group belongs to the newly established Centre for Cluster Headache with the aim to understand the molecular and genetic mechanisms behind cluster headache, as well as to identify and characterize new targets for diagnosis and treatment.

Duties

The project will mainly be focused on understanding if cadmium exposure from cigarettes and e-cigarettes causes epigenetic alterations in cluster headache patients by an integrative and interdisciplinary approach. The candidate needs knowledge concerning the use of molecular biology tools to elucidate biological pathways which are believed to be involved in cluster headache pathophysiology. Experience in working with laboratory assays such as qPCR, western blot and immunohistochemical staining and using statistical programs such as GraphPad Prism, SSPS, Matlab and R is an appreciated property of the applicant. In addition, previous experience of working with electrophysiology, handling laboratory animals and performing rodent behavioral pain techniques is a requirement. The candidate should have experience of cell culture work in addition to confocal and fluorescence microscopy and be capable of working independently in a cell lab. It is important that the candidate fits in the team and emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. A person is eligible for this position if he or she has achieved a PhD or equivalent.

The postdoc will participate in regular team meetings and seminars. Master and PhD students’ co-supervision will be part of the duties and a way to transfer knowledge on specific techniques to students. Writing manuscripts and grant applications are also part of the duties and therefore the postdoc is required to have excellent writing skills and be proficient in English.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
