Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) and the Vascular Surgery Section Group are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work with Assoc Professor Joy Roy, Professor Rebecka Hultgren and co-workers on a project that is focused on determining how abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) grow, the evolution of rupture risk as AAAs grow, and finding new therapeutic targets to prevent AAA growth and rupture. The project is based in a clinically integrated network of researchers in vascular surgery, imaging, and biomechanical modeling, and has close contact with the Department of Vascular Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital and the Department of Solid Mechanics at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Your mission

The proposed project, with Associate Professor Joy Roy and Professor Rebecka Hultgren as project leaders, is to integrate clinical, imaging, and molecular data to investigate how AAAs grow and predict rupture risk. The group is affiliated with the largest vascular center in Sweden (the Department of Vascular Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital) and has access to large patient populations with vascular disease. In addition, the group has one of the largest biobanks of AAA patients, including aortic wall tissue, blood samples, and imaging studies. There are a number of ongoing clinical studies, and a few more are projected to start shortly. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to integrate clinical, imaging, molecular, and biomechanical data using the latest statistical and artificial intelligence methods to further explore how AAAs grow and predict rupture risk.

Your profile

The ideal candidate will be a Medical Doctor. We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual who is passionate about full-time research and has the potential to work both independently and within a translational team. The daily work is performed at Bioclinicum, Karolinska University Hospital Solna, and requires full-time dedication. Experience in advanced statistical modeling (using R), biomechanical modeling (such as finite element analysis and/or computational fluid dynamics), and artificial intelligence-based methods is highly desirable. The appointed person will be expected to plan and carry out research projects independently and in conjunction with the team leaders, and to participate in national and international collaboration networks. Willingness to work flexibly to achieve project demands and targets as agreed upon within a team is necessary. Being able to organize and prioritize one's own work, as well as organize research within the project timetable, is essential. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records is also necessary. The applicant must have experience in teaching and tutoring since there will be some work-related supervising assignments included in the position, mostly of medical students. Fluency in English and Swedish is a requirement, as reading patient records, recruitment and follow-up of patients for clinical trials will be part of the role. Good social and analytical skills are essential. The ability to travel to other countries is also essential.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Assessment criteria

A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the following basis, as proposed by Karolinska Institutet:

Documented research experience and analytical skills Documented subject knowledge relevant to the area of research Scientific articles and a track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals Excellent communication skills Ability to work both independently and within collaborations, particularly at the interface between clinical and laboratory staff Experience and ability to undertake the various teaching activities

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis. Personal suitability is an important criterion.
