Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine (MWLC) aims to contribute to the improvement of human health by conducting cutting-edge research in reparative medicine and related subjects, by creating a new platform for synergies between academia and innovation in Sweden and Hong Kong as well as Mainland China, and fostering future leaders in both academia and industry. 

MWLC was established to further accelerate research in stem cell biology, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, and regenerative medicine. MWLC operates two nodes, one based at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden and the other in Hong Kong, located in Science Park, Shatin. The Hong Kong node currently includes four research groups, consisting of a total of 30 scientists.

 

Bioinformatics Platform

The Bioinformatics Platform works within a vibrant scientific environment of MWLC and Hong Kong universities, and provides computational support for research projects. The team contributes to scientific discoveries in the areas of neuroscience, dermatology, cardiovascular diseases, and other stem cell-based translational medicine. We are specialized in single-cell transcriptomics and epigenomics data analysis, and provide expertise from the beginning to the end of the projects from experiment design to scientific writing and reporting the results. 

 

Key responsibilities

The successful candidate will be part of a larger network of experienced bioinformaticians in Hong Kong and Stockholm and will participate in collaborative research projects at MWLC. The tasks will be focused on the analysis of the single-cell transcriptomics and epigenomics data. 

 

Essential in the role 

We welcome applications from candidates with: 

  • A Master’s or PhD degree in bioinformatics, computer science, data sciences, biosciences or a related discipline 
  • Experience in the analysis of next generation sequencing data, such as RNA-seq, ChiP-seq or ATAC-seq data
  • Expertise in R and foundations of statistics and machine learning
  • Firm knowledge of Linux environment
  • Programming skills in Python
  • Basic understanding of molecular and cell biology
  • Excellent communication skills as well as ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English 

Previous experience in the analysis of single-cell transcriptomics or epigenomics data is desirable but not required. Practical experience in data integration is a strong merit. Expertise in bioinformatics workflows and the workflow management software is a plus. The ideal candidate understands the relevant statistical/computational methods, the foundations of cell and molecular biology and has experience in high-throughput computing. He/she has a passion for science and data analytics and has a problem-solving attitude. 


The employment 

This is a one-year fixed-term employment to start as soon as possible. 

The assignment is located at MWLC, Hong Kong, and the employment will follow local labour laws. 

A competitive remuneration package including 10% on top of basic salary (fully-taxable) intended as pension will be offered in addition to MPF employer’s contribution and medical benefits.
