Division
The postdoctoral position is available in the Division of Clinical Physiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine in Huddinge (KI South Campus, Flemingsberg). Our research aims to raise awareness of the relationship between physical activity and health, and of the causes of impaired body functions such as muscle wasting in disease or aging. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with the Unit of Clinical Physiology at the Karolinska University Hospital. Traditional metabolic and physiological measurements are combined with molecular analyses in various tissues as well as in primary cell cultures.

The research
We and others have shown that physical activity after a cancer diagnosis leads to maintained physical functioning and quality of life. In addition, epidemiological and animal-model based evidence support the role of exercise to enhance therapeutic efficacy, reduce recurrence and improve survival. However, very little is known about how exercise exerts its beneficial effects. In a recent publication, we showed that the immune system, and especially CD8+ T-cells, are instrumental for the anti-neoplastic effects of exercise and that exercise induced metabolites have the potential to alter immune cell function.
The project
A postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, in the lab of Helene Rundqvist, PhD, for a highly motivated individual. For the project, we will combine animal models with human intervention trials to investigate the effects of high intensity exercise on CD8+ T-cell mobilization and function. The successful applicant will characterize CD8+ T-cell function after exercise both in vivo and ex-vivo, with specific regard to effector function, metabolism and homing capacity. To accomplish this, the applicant will have access to state of the art human exercise facilities, animal models, and pre-clinical labs in an innovative and translational environment.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with extensive and documented experience in murine cancer models, multi-color flow cytometry and functional characterization of immune cells. Previous experience of in vivo and in vitro imaging techniques, metabolic profiling, and epigenetic characterization is considered a merit. A keen interest in science and the ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team as well as a good ability to communicate in English is required. Emphasis will be placed on personal skills, knowledge, and abilities, as well as on documented previous work.
Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Location: Huddinge
Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
