To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

We seek a PhD student who will contribute to the unit of kidney epidemiology led by Prof Juan Jesus Carrero (https://medarbetare.ki.se/people/jucarr). The main goal of research activities in his team is to improve the understanding of the causes, consequences and management of acute and chronic kidney diseases.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We seek a dedicated and creative student to join our team, someone committed to furthering knowledge of drug safety/effectiveness, particularly in the cross-section between drug safety and kidney diseases. The applicant will be part of a team of researchers working on real-world evidence analyses on inappropriate use of medications. The research involves drug utilization analyses, as well as comparative effectiveness and safety, with special focus on how these may be compromised in patients with chronic kidney disease. The project will also explore the value of machine learning methods in detecting rare adverse drug effects. Analyses are to be carried out in the Stockholm CREAtinine Measurements (SCREAM) project, a longitudinal administrative healthcare utilization cohort from the region of Stockholm (2.2 Million inhabitants) which is enriched with complete information on undertaken laboratory measurements and pharmacy dispensations.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities

• The applicant should have a master’s degree in medicine, pharmacy, biostatistics, or related discipline, and have a strong interest in pharmacoepidemiology and kidney disease.
• The applicant should have strong skills and experience in quantitative data analysis.
• The applicant should have at least some knowledge or training in epidemiology.
• Programming skills in STATA or R is considered a strong merit.
• Experience with research in the field of pharmacoepidemiology is a strong merit.
• Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
• The applicant should be able to work well in a team, as well as having the ability to work independently.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
