Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group
The doctoral position will be placed in the Unit of Occupational medicine at the Institute of Environmental Medicine. The aim of the unit’s research is to identify and prevent chemical, physical, ergonomical and psychosocial health hazards in the work environment. Our main activities include research, education and dissemination of information. The research groups at the unit are multi-professional and include epidemiologists, statisticians, physicians, psychologists, sociologists, physiotherapists, civil engineers, public health specialists and others. The unit takes part in education of medical students, occupational health nurses and physicians, and specialists in occupational and environmental medicine.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
The doctoral student will conduct his or her research within a research project focusing on mental health consequences of gender-based workplace violence (gender-based and sexual harassment). The aim of the project is to, in representative samples of the Swedish working population, generate new knowledge about the importance of the individual’s relative position in the workplace for risks of being exposed to gender-based and sexual harassment. The aim is furthermore to develop our understanding of the long-term consequences of gender-based workplace violence on mental ill-health, sickness absence, sickness presenteeism, and prescription of antidepressant medication, tranquilizers and sleeping pills. An additional aim is to develop knowledge of the reciprocal associations between organizational factors, leadership and the cohesiveness of the workgroup on the one hand and gender-based workplace violence on the other. The student will together with the supervisors, within the framework of this project, develop more specific research questions for the doctoral thesis. The doctoral student is expected to complete four studies. With the support of supervisors, the student will perform statistical analyses of existing cohort data and write up the results of each study for publication in peer reviewed journals.
