The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

Your mission

The position is placed in the research group of Christer Höög at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Karolinska Institutet. We study various aspects of oogenesis and spermatogenesis using mouse genetic models. The central scientific interest is to understand the division of female germ cells, with a special focus on mechanisms involved in age-related aneuploidy in mouse and human eggs.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher with a strong background in developmental biology with a practical experience in manipulating mouse female germ cells and eggs. The approaches will include a broad range of biochemical, genetic and microscopic techniques to study chromosome segregation in female eggs, including super-resolution microscopy. The applicant will be responsible for setting up and organizing the project and supervising direct reports as well as PhD students and/or technical stuff.

Your profile

A person is eligible to be appointed Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.

The candidate should hold a PhD in Molecular Biology, have an education in physical/biophysical area and a strong background in developmental biology, with the preference to a prior work in meiosis in relation to the meiotic synaptonemal complex and meiotic divisions with a strong publication records in these fields. The candidate should have an extensive training in handling germ cells, including spermatocyte and oocyte isolation at various developmental stages, oocyte microinjections, fixation and basic biochemical techniques. Knowledge and experience in fluorescent microscopy, live imaging microscopy, image analysis and image data processing of the germ cells is required. The candidate needs to have experience in statistical analysis, R, MatLab, Imaris and ImageJ software. The position will demand to work with mice animal models, so practical experience in handling mice and the FELASA C or corresponding certificates are the merits.

Since the position includes many international contacts and the unit has staff from all over the world the candidate should be fluent in English (both spoken and written), and demonstrate excellent communication skills, documented by participation in international meetings. The basic knowledge of Swedish is a merit. The successful candidate must have a strong analytical ability as well as be well organized. The candidate’s personal skills will be highly valued. Qualified candidates should have a prior teaching experience.
