Karolinska Institutet, the Department of Medicine, Huddinge

Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine, Huddinge conducts preclinical and clinical research in a variety of areas together with undergraduate and graduate education. The department is internationally oriented and consists of seven units with about 60 teams.

Research group
The Cell and Gene Therapy Group is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual as a biomedical analyst/scientist within the research fields of Hematology, Cancer Immunotherapy and Gene Therapy. The group has a particular interest in exploring natural killer (NK) cells in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). MM is a monoclonal plasma cell malignancy representing 10% of all hematological cancers. NK cells are a vital part of the innate immune system, capable of tumor cell killing. We have been involved in a large number of clinical trials, including the first Swedish clinical trials assessing the safety of both patient and donor derived ex vivo expanded NK cells in patients with various malignancies.

The Cell and Gene Therapy Group is a multidisciplinary research group with 15 members including 2 PhD students. The group belongs to the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM), a translational research center encompassing research groups involved in hematology, hematopoiesis, immunology, and cell therapy.

Entry requirements and skills
To qualify, the applicant should at least have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biomedicine, molecular cell biology, immunology, biomedical scientist program, or equivalent. Applicants should have knowledge and adequate training in laboratory techniques, biotechnology, molecular biology or equivalent and also have previous experience of independent work as well as experience in scientific writing in the form of scientific publications, funding applications and/or ethical permit applications. Specific knowledge and experience of cell culture work, genetic modification of cells and experience with supervising students is mandatory. Expertise with cancer research techniques: mouse cancer models, histology, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, GMP, and common lab techniques (for example, cRNA extraction, lentiviral vectors) is considered a strong merit. Professional fluency in English is mandatory, as the day to day communication within the lab is carried out in English. Fluency in Swedish is meriting.

The position requires experience with the above described methodologies and most importantly, a capacity for problem solving, high ambition, organizational skills, collaborative and communicative skills. Great importance will be placed on personal fit and qualities.

The candidate must be highly motivated, have good communication skills, and the ability to interact in a dynamic group in collaboration with international teams. You are expected to have a strong drive to perform translational research and be instrumental in the elaboration of experimental design and methodology.

Duties
The successful candidate has documented experience in molecular and cellular biology techniques as well as experience in taking care of common routines required to run a successful research lab.

The work and responsibilities will involve:

  • Providing expertise on designing and conducting tumor biology experiments
  • Guiding and supporting lab members in experimental research projects
  • Working independently on various research projects
  • Ensuring smooth daily cell culture and wet lab operations
  • Supporting the principal investigator in administrative tasks such as designing and optimizing processes with a GMP mindset.
